It looks like it is a season of Avalanches in the subcontinent. First an avalanche struck in Gulmarg region of India, then in Kohistan region of Pakistan. Another avalanche was witnessed in India on 24 feb 2010. And it struck at the most unlikely place, Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior, and there was no snow. Caught in the Avalanche were 11 South African players. And unfortunately for them they could neither run nor hide from it. They had to stay there and face it. The avalanche even injured two of their players, Duminy and Langeveldth.
Another nail-biting finish, first a test match win on day-5 closing hours, then a last ball win in the 1st ODI. I fear I may chomp all my nails by the end of this tour. India was in comfortable positions untill Steyn and Parnell showcased South Africa’s Kumble-Srinath version. But fortunately for India they fell short by a run. Everyone thought it was over when Kallis got out with South Africa requiring 74 from 43 balls and only two wickets in hand. But tailenders Steyn and Parnell started slogging the ball in death overs of a match and they almost snatched a victory from team India.
Well, that is what most of us were expecting and that is what exactly this series delivered. A classic win by South Africa in the first match at Nagpur and an equally impressive win by India at their most beloved and should we say a very lucky Eden Gardens. We have seen India vanquishing many teams in the past on this very ground, this time it was Proteas turn. After humiliating defeat in Nagpur Test, team India was in spot of bother but they showed tremendous character by bouncing back and leveling the series.-A true sign of champion side. There was fuss about many issues No. 1 ranking, kolkata pitch, team composition, batting order, injuries and form of key players etc. But team India made sure that none of these issues come in their way to top of table. The first test of the so called Word Championship of Test, shoehorned to consolidate the No.1 ranking, didn’t go India’s way. This was India’s third defeat by an inning in last 25 years, surprisingly all three against same opposition. Indian team has been consistent throughout last 2-3 years, and ICC rankings confirm this. But this loss has raised various questions. Many still doubt our No. 1 ranking, our bowling attack and our bench strength. A team whose top order has collectively scored more than 43000 runs and whose strike bowler share more than 700 wickets certainly deserves a top spot. This excludes contribution by two greats Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble, who were Instrumental in team India’s achievements over the years. I, for sure do not doubt No. 1 ranking. Let us keep that for some other day and talk about team India’s first loss under Dhoni’s captaincy.
On the eve of his 100th Test for South Africa, paceman Makhaya Ntini wants to oust India from the top spot in the ICC rankings by helping his side beat England in a four-match series starting tomorrow in Centurion. (more…)
