Wait! this wasn’t a final match of the series. But they way it was staged, I was actually waiting for Ravi Shastri to announce Man of the Series. Then I realized it was just another game of the series. Match between India and Pakistan are always more than a game of cricket. It’s game of pride, emotion and extreme importance. Football World Cup may have been successful in snatching away everyone’s attention, but it seems a series of mediocre matches opened an opportunity and India Vs Pakistan match scored big time.
While the awe inspiring 268-run chase was set up by man of the match Gautam Gambhir (83) and MS Dhoni (56), it was a calm play from Suresh Raina (34 off 27 balls) and Harbhajan (15 off 10 balls) sealed the victory for India.
We have to appreciate Indian batting. Specially Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni. While Pakistani spinners were ruthless and bowling right at the weak spot, the duo continued to take singles. Perhaps this was the biggest reason that India could outplay Pakistan. Indian batsmen who are known as spin experts were too blunt against Ajmal and Shoeb Malik. Shoeb Akhtar and other pacers were economical initially but gave away some quick runs later. Akhtar was too tired and exhausted and according to me, he has lost his throbbing pace. He was feared by many batsmen but today he was too numb to produce any fear in Indian camp.
Harbhajan Singh played an important role in Indian victory. His 15 runs were too crucial. Two sixes he hit at the right time were invaluable. He helped to take off some pressure from the striker batsman Raina. However, Raina gave away his wicket freely by getting run-out in the final over. When he got run-out, Gambhir left the dressing room and and did not see rest of the over because of nervousness.
All in all, it was a good game to watch and it successfully held the legacy of nail biting matches between India and Pakistan. After India lost to Zimbabwe and Football World Cup coming around, people has virtually stopped following cricket. This was like a rejuvenating spa for the game of cricket.
Though we are all set for the final between Sri Lanka and India, I am sure Indian viewers must be pleased enough even if we India fails to grab the trophy. For them, winning against Pakistan is as good as winning a World Cup. I am sure same would be the case in the other side of national boundary.
Now, let’s see if India keeps the winning momentum that they have gained from this big win.
