They were in driving seat. They could have won the match with ease. With around 50 runs needed in some 30 balls and game was not the normal ODIs but IPL where a batsmen scores double the runs required for Delhi to win. It was all panic streak that cost Daredevils a match. Poor bowling, loosing crucial wickets at crucial times and none of the batsmen wished to fight were the features of Delhi’s performance.
Not only during the run chase that went haywire after the loss of Virender Sehwag’s wicket, Delhi had a chance to close out Kolkata’s innings after having bowled admirably in the middle overs. However, they let it slip as Kolkata ended up boosting their total to 181, which once looked like a sub-150 tally.
Delhi’s bowlers allowed Ganguly and Gayle to build a strong partnership and mock up a decent total at 181 despite loosing two quick wickets. Even when they got out for chase, Delhi seemed too unplanned for what was to come. At the time when Sehwag fell to an in-swinger from Ajit Agarkar, for 64, the visitors needed 48 off 32 balls with seven wickets in hand. Things were never the same for the Delhi from that point on.
From Kolkata, Abdhulla bowled great spell. His spell made Delhi’s condition more miserable. He came out to bowl when Delhi was in comfortable position and had 7 wickets in hands. He took crucial wickets and also showed great fielding performance with a fantastic run out. Ganguly was also exceptional in the field. Rarely we see him diving to the right and left. He took a few catches as well.
All in all, a lazy show by Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata eventually grabs yet another victory. However, it is important for Kolkata to maintain the consistency in the performance. Their top batsmen have to play through 15 overs minimum. As Aniket rightly put forward the secret of Mumbai Indian’s winning streak, Kolkata too need to formulate a strategy that helps them find the sync between the players and that should get reflected in the performance.
Amongst all this action, there was yet another incidence of slow over rate. Ganguly again was fined $40,000 for slow over rate. This also cost each player $10,000. Ganguly was earlier fined $20,000 for his team’s slow over rate against Hyderabad.
