Finally It’s Ganguly Shining; Deccan Dis-Charged

Ganguly's Innings against Deccan ChargersAfter 8 matches in IPL 2010, after critics putting sword on his abilities, there comes the phoenix from ashes – Sourav Ganguly. His brilliant knock of 88 off just 54 balls dragged Kolkata back in the race for semis with 24 runs victory over Chargers. Ganguly was in splendid touch and hit nine fours and five sixes en route a fine innings despite losing opening partner Chris Gayle early after winning the toss and electing to bat. The left-hander combined well with David Hussey for a 78-run stand to set up the Knight Riders innings at 181-6. His 5 huge sixes proved that dada’s magic is still alive. He hit 3 of those 6s to P. Ojha in the 16th over. While hitting yet another of those he got caught at the deep midwicket.

It was very important game for Kolkata as well as for Hyderabad to get close to semi final birth. Now Kolkata with 4 Wins and 4 loss  stand at joint-third place in the IPL points tally. Bangalore and Rajasthan share same position, however, their net run rate is better than Kolkata.  Last night Ganguly and company created some new records. It was Ganguly’s highest-ever strike rate of 162.96. 78 Runs added by Sourav Ganguly and David Hussey – Kolkata’s highest fourth-wicket partnership in all IPL games. Interestingly, the previous best was also between this pair – 68 against Rajasthan  in 2008. It was Kolkata’s highest total at home ground in all IPL matches. Their previous highest was 175 for 7 against Punjab in 2008.

I totally agree with what Harsha said. He said  ”It’s natural tendency of a player to believe that their job is done after 50. But it never holds true. Unless one of the top 3-4 batsmen stays at the ground till 15 overs, it is difficult to put up match winning total “.

He also said that “We may be encouraged to say that Ganguly didn’t face any bowler who can push him back. But we cannot rule out his fine innings”.

Hyderabad’s Inning:

Deccan were off to a poor start when captain Adam Gilchrist was sent back by Ajit Agarkar for nine. Kolkata bowlers bowled a tight line and kept the visitors in check. Herschelle Gibbs scored a half-century and had good support from Mohnish Mishra (29) and Andrew Symonds (45) but they could never break the shackles.

Kolkata bowlers displayed a fine performance by restricting DC’s smashing batsmen like Gibbs, Gilchrist, Symonds, Rohit Sharma. Wickets were evenly distributed among all the bowlers.

Ok! See what people have said on this story: “Finally It’s Ganguly Shining; Deccan Dis-Charged”

  1. Aniket Aniket says:

Probably, Gilchrist lost a match when he asked Ojha – left arm spinner to bowl 17th over to none other than Dada. Dada made sure that DC pays heavy price for that. Ojha even bowled two wide balls in panic. And Gilly was generous to accept this in post match presentation.

54 ball 88 was a great inning. And If he had stayed till the end then he might have got to his hundred.
