Hyderabad Charges Into Semies

Deccan in SemisThe Chargers charged their way into semifinals of IPL-2010 by defeating Delhi in a match that was a virtual quarter final. Thanks to the 54 runs inning by Symonds and some excellent fielding by Rohit Sharma and a disciplined bowling performance; the Chargers defended a modest total of 145 run successfully. Since the Super kings had defeated Punjab earlier in the day, the equation for the spot in the semi final was simplified and the team wining encounter between Hyderabad and Delhi was to go into the semifinal.

After wining the toss the chargers elected to bat first just as they had done last time they played against Delhi at Cuttack.Since the track was expected to play slow the chargers chose Chaminda Vass over the in-form Ryan Harris and Harmeet Singh was to play in place of RP Singh who had a tough going in the last match.

Early on Deccan tried to set a huge target but was quickly reduced to 66/4 in 8.6 overs. Gilchrist again failed to provide a good start and was out in the second over playing a rash shot. T Suman was bowled over by Yadav at an individual score of 5 runs. Hero of the last match Rohit Sharma was next to go when he edged it to Karthik. Mishra departed soon – run out well short of his crease. The track was playing slow and a score of some where around 150 was going to be a challenging total. But to get there Deccan needed a good partnership. And since Andrew Symonds was still there all the hopes were pinned on him.

Symonds played a classical knock punishing every loose delivery and taking patient singles otherwise. Mitchell Marsh on the other side played a sensible knock. He picked up singles and gave Symonds most of the strike and more importantly held his wicket providing stability. Together they put up a partnership of 50 runs in about 6 overs scoring the runs at a rate of just above 9. Deccan looked poised to set somewhere around 160 runs. But Symonds had to  depart soon after scoring his half century. Coming down the track he hit it straight to Mhanas standing at long off. He scored 54 runs in just 30 deliveries hitting 5 sixes and 3 fours. Just after Symonds, Marsh followed. Rahul Sharma, Sumanth and Vass took the total to 145 in the stipulated 20 overs.

Delhi started the chase but soon lost their openers courtesy some brilliant catches by Rohit Sharma. The catch of Sehwag was absolute blinder. Sehwag trying to push a full length delivery by Vass to the covers got a thick edge. The ball went to the right of Rohit Sharma who was standing in slips. He stretched fully and picked it up just above the ground. Dilshan was next to go. He moved wide across the line trying to flick it over fine leg but was caught right in front of the stumps by Hermeet Singh.

Delhi was reduced to 25/3 in 3.4 overs. They still had captain Gambhir, Collingwood and Karthik. But except for Collingwood no one really gave a fight and stayed on crease. Delhi kept losing wickets thanks to some very disciplined bowling by the Chargers. Even some sloppy fielding by the chargers in the late overs could not change fortunes for Delhi. Eventually they managed 134 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs thus loosing to Chargers by 11 runs and failing to make it to the semi finals for the first time in three seasons.

The Chargers registered their fifth successive win and stood second on the points table with 16 points from 8 wins and 6 losses. Defending Champions will face Chennai Super Kings in the semifinal on 22nd april.
