Mahela Demolishes Kolkata

Awesome is the word that defines the destructive innings played by little fella Mahela 110 runs from 59 balls comprising 14 fours and 3 maximums with a staggering strike rate of 186.44. After an injury to Shaun Marsh and last minute inclusion in team, it looked like Mahela wanted to prove his point to team management that he is the best option that they have. He scored more than 50% of required runs and spoiled the party for Kolkata. Many people may think that this is the only role left for Punjab of spoiling the party but they still have an outside chance of making it to semis only if they win each remaining matches with some results of other fixtures going their way.

When Punjab started chasing a mammoth score of 201 in 20 overs, Mahela and Bisla provided exactly THE thing ‘a good start’. They scored 69 runs in first 6 overs losing just a wicket of Bisla. Sanga and Yuvi then joined the party with Mahela. Sanga played some fantastic shots for his cameo of 38 from 22. It seems like the Prince is getting back his lost glory, Yuvraj played well for 33 from 16 with 3 towering sixes.

All this performances took away the charm produced by big fella Chris Gayle. He played a brutal inning of 88 from 42 balls containing 6 fours and 8 monstrous big hits. Dada (36 of 31) and Tiwary (35 of 32) gave a good support with Mathews and Hussey finishing the inning exactly the way they wanted.

Gayle and Tiwary scored 33 runs in 13^th over bowled by the English all rounder Ravi Bopara – a new record for maximum runs scored in an over in IPL. In that over Gayle smashed 4 consecutive sixes over mid wicket. Two balls were lost during this brutal attack. Irfan bowled a good 17^th over to restrict Mathews and Tiwary from scoring big and conceded just 6 singles. Mathews finished Kolkata inning with a four to reach to 200 mark. Scorecard of Kolkata displayed 200/ 3 after 20 overs, a big reason to smile for SRK and Kolkata fans which lasted only for few minutes.

Obviously Mahela was awarded Man of the match for scoring the 12^th century of IPL and 4^th for this season. With a win for Punjab and loss for Kolkata, SRK’s smile shifted to Preity’s face. A tough road ahead for Punjab but it not over yet, they  need play to their potential.
