Kings pride held high, after Kolkata and Mumbai, it was Delhi this time. They know they are out of contention but they are proving their point by defeating top teams. Punjab handed out a crushing seven-wicket defeat to Delhi and compounded Delhi’s semifinal woes.
Having restricted Delhi to 111 and required rate below 6; it was one-sided affair there onwards and a comprehensive win for Kings. Jayawardene set the game and Sangakkara and Yuvraj did the rest. This was the fourth victory for Punjab, second in succession.
Delhi has won three matches by setting targets in excess of 170 and they had similar plans last night but Kotla pitch played a role in low scoring game. Some deliveries were keeping low and were almost unplayable and Punjab’s bowlers bowled well to restrict famed Delhi batting line-up to meager 111.
Most Delhi batsmen seemed in a hurry to get away from the bright sun and be comfortable in the team’s dugout. Virender Sehwag perished to the first ball he faced, skipper Gautam Gambhir smashed five boundaries before getting run-out for the third time in succession. Two deliveries later Warner too was run-out and there after Punjab struck quite often.

Gambhir's Suicidal RUn-Out

Unsuccessful Attempt By Warner
After loss of top order, middle order could not put up any fight and lost their wickets cheaply. It was a disciplined bowling performance by Punjab. There was not a single six in Delhi’s inning. Irfan pathan bowled well for 24-3 but Piyush Chawla was exceptional he finished with figures 4-0-16-2 and was awarded Man-of-the-Match.
Probably Delhi aimed for too much and ended up way short of it. 140 would have been a competitive total. Punjab played cautiously and did not crumble as Delhi did. Now Delhi will have to win 2 of 3 games to ensure a semifinal birth and next in line for Punjab is Deccan.
Chargers better beware of Kings.
