One who said, “T20 is all about power hitting” will have to alter his statement following Murali Vijay’s knock of 127 of 56 balls. Murali Vijay redressed the notion that batting in T20 game is more of slog hitting than playing proper cricketing strokes. It was a magnificent display of batting by Chennai lad. Not very often we witness more sixes than fours in an inning, but yesterday was different day. Murali Vijay hit 8 fours and 11 sixes and helped Chennai to post the highest total in IPL history.
Every single person predicted a run-fest on Chepauk but they never dreamt of something like this. Last night, total 469 runs were scored in just 40 overs at an astonishing strike rate of 11.75 runs per over. Rajasthan put a good show after Vijay’s heroics but fell short by 23 runs.
At the start, after winning a toss MSD decided to bat first in hot conditions and his batters did not disappoint him. Murali Vijay made his intentions clear early in the inning when he hit Narwal for six and two fours in second over. He along with Hayden and Raina put up 82 runs on board. Morkel was promoted up the order and he and Vijay decided to take on Rajasthan bowlers.
At the end of 11 overs Chennai were 97/2. After that there was flurry of 4’s and 6’s. Morkel (62 in 34 – 3×4, 5×6) and Vijay put up a record partnership of 152 runs in just 66 balls. RR bowlers were clueless during Chennai assault. Chennai scored 149 runs in last 9 overs. Runs scored in those nine overs are 16,16,22,19,26,12,18,9,11 in series. It was almost like watching a highlight of an inning.
After Chennai’s inning Warne said, “Let’s make a history boys”, but little he knew that they were history already. Rajasthan side boasted with arrival of Watson took up the challenge. But Naman Ojha’s 94 in 55 balls were no match for Vijay’s effort. Watson’s played a cameo 60 in 25 balls but that was not enough. Chennais bowling looked venerable yet again but the Doug Bollinger made all the difference. His spell of 4-0-15-2 made sure that Chennai defends 246 successfully. His efforts on boundary line to dismiss dangerous Yusuf Pathan was remarkable as we all know what he is capable of.
With a win over Royals, Chennai entered in top half of points table. They now need to win at least 3 of their remaining 5 games to make it to semis. And with current form and arrival of Australians Hussey and Bollinger they look strong contenders for Semis.
