T20 World Cup action in Guyana was cut short due to constant rain interruptions. And the victims were Zimbabwe and England. In the first match between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, Lanka posted 174 runs on board. Zimbabwe started their chase under dark clouds but could continue only for one over.
After the first interruption their target was revised to 106 in 11 overs. And when the play resumed Sri Lanka managed to squeeze in five overs. A play of 5 overs is sufficient to get a result of rain interrupted T20 game by D/L method.
Zimbabwe needed 43 at end of 5 overs but they were stuck at 29 and eventually Lanka won the game by 14 runs.
Jayawardene, who is in terrific form played another beautiful knock to get to his first T20 international hundred, this was fourth T20 hundred in all and second of T20 WC – 2010. In his 64 ball 100 innings he hit 10 fours and 4 sixes. None of the other Lankan batsmen were impressive. Dilshan is still struggling and only Sangakkara can explain why he is pushing Jayasuriya down the order.
In the second match between England and West Indies, England played one of their best innings scoring 191 in their quota of 20 overs. England got of to a flier and were 60-1 at the end of 10 overs. Then the Moragan (55 in 35) and Luke Wright (45 in 27) got going and it was raining in sixes. Soon the real showers happened when it stopped the play WI were 30-0 in 2.2 overs. When it resumed they needed 30 from 22 balls. West Indies won the game with a ball to spare and entered the Super-8 stage.
Collingwood was upset over the outcome of the game. He was spot on when he said, “We’re very, very frustrated, 95% of the time 191 runs is enough but with D/L it wasn’t. They need a different calculation.”
England’s loss is sad to see. D/L method is proving useless day by day. It is the meothd based solely on luck. I agree to Collingwood that 191 is enough and I am sure WI could not have chased it. I wish to see good cricket not the luck game. D/L method should be discarded.
